Chris Ristic gave us a talk upon a great literary work titled The Death of Ivan Ilyich. This seminal novel by Leo Tolstoy was published 140 years ago but nonetheless has a very modern theme, telling the story of a high-court judge in 19th-century Russia and his sufferings and death from a terminal illness. As he lies dying, he reflects upon the empty hollowness of what to all appearances was a highly successful life and career. It was an existential novel before Existentialism. Chris’s notes are extremely informative, and well worth reading over.
For the activity session, Sue Philipp invited the members to expound upon a list of colourful English idioms. There were some creative (but incorrect) answers to ‘Achilles heel’, ‘barking up the wrong tree’, ‘chewing the fat’, and ‘waving a dead chicken’. It was all good fun though!
For his presentation about The Healing Powers of Cannabis, Sarab Sandhu did a good job in explaining its first known use of (in a Hindu text of Vedas first written ~5000 years ago); references to cannabis in the old testament; the difference between the THC and CBD compounds, as well as his personal experience with using CBD and its health benefits. The audience particiapated in a lively and engaging Q&A session.
Over the next few weeks several events are being initiated, notably a leisurely walk in Markham/Unionville to enjoy the cherry blossoms. More news to follow.
Our next general meeting will be held on Saturday May 30th at the Langstaff Community Centre. I hope to see you there!
